LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The U.S. Justice Department’s new pardon attorney said he will take a hard look at the plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020.
Ed Martin Jr said he plans to review the case quickly. He appeared on the Breanna Morello Show this week and said the cases against Barry Croft and Adam Fox deserve a second look. “On the pardon front, we can’t leave these guys behind,” Martin said.

Croft and Fox were among 14 arrested for the plot. Authorities maintained they were part of a group looking to kidnap Whitmer at her northern Michigan vacation home. Defense attorneys argued FBI informants infiltrated the group and encouraged the plot.
A jury convicted Croft and Fox of conspiracy in 2022. They were sentenced to 20 and 16 years in prison respectively.
Ultimately, nine people were convicted or pleaded guilty in the case; five were acquitted.
