MARQUETTE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Upper Peninsula’s largest city is continuing its efforts to regulate e-bikes on its multi-use path, streets, and sidewalks.

The Marquette Traffic and Parking Advisory Committee held a special meeting earlier this week where members voted to work with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department on future regulations for e-bikes.

Barbara Owdziej, Marquette Traffic & Parking Advisory Committee Chair, explained the problem to the media. “Our committee feels like it’s not so much about the type of bikes that are being used but the manner in which they’re being used,” she said.

The current city ordinance states only Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on the multi-use path. Speeds are capped at 20 miles per hour.

Local law enforcement is also on board helping educate e-bike riders and issuing citations when needed.
