PORTAGE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is getting a first-class upgrade after receiving $14.2 million in federal funding to extend a runway and boost safety.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) gave the all-clear for the Airport Improvement Program for the construction of a 450-foot extension to Runway 17/35.

In addition, officials said the project will extend the parallel taxiway, reconstruct blast pads, and relocate the runway lighting system and glideslope navigational aid. Crews will also install new perimeter fencing and apply updated runway markings.

Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026 and finish later that year.
