HOLLAND, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – As the weather cools, Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) crews are shutting down designated swimming areas for the year.
The DNR, which starts this process after Labor Day annually, involves removing the white and orange buoys that designate a lake’s swimming area.

Designated swim areas are locations of shallow water (less than five feet) that have lower risks of currents and waves.
Beaches remain open to the public, but officials advise against swimming after the buoys are removed.
In addition, the flag system that warns beachgoers of dangerous conditions will come down until buoyed swim areas are reestablished next season.
