GAYLORD, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A 64-year-old assistant referee has been arraigned on assault and battery charges after he allegedly grabbed and pushed a 16-year-old during a match.

Michigan State Police say the initial investigation showed Randall Smith running on the sidelines while officiating the game between Gaylord High School’s Varsity Boys Soccer team and St. Francis High School on October 14. Smith tripped over a teen standing in front of the bench. Smith allegedly raised his penalty flag, grabbed the player by the shirt, and pushed him over the bench.

The now viral video of the incident appeared on social media.

Smith pled not guilty at Thursday’s arraignment in 86th District Court. He will be back in court on Dec. 4.
