LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Two turkeys received a little extra “pop” after being pardoned just before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Governor Whitmer pardoned two turkey sisters with the names Faygo and Vernors. Their names were selected through a bracket-style competition on social media. Tens of thousands of Michiganders voted on 1,500 entries during the statewide turkey naming competition.

“We continue our tradition of pardoning a turkey,” said Governor Whitmer. “But this year, we’re pardoning two turkey sisters, a reminder that the most important part of the holiday season is coming together with friends and family.” Gov. Whitmer added, “This Thanksgiving, I hope everyone enjoys time with loved ones, finds a way to give back to the community, and cheers on our Lions.”

The Thanksgiving season is also a reminder that “Michigan agriculture touches all sides of the dinner plate,” as stated by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Tim Boring. “MDARD is also giving thanks to our farmers and producers, processors, grocery store employees, food safety inspectors and more who make these celebrations possible each year.”

Winning turkey names in the statewide contest during the past few years included Aiden Cluckinson, Dolly Pardon, and Mitch E. Gander.
