DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Timber! An exhibition showcasing the growing potential of mass timber construction, including skyscrapers built from wood, is now open in downtown Detroit.
“Tall Timber: The Future of Cities in Wood,” a traveling exhibition created by the Skyscraper Museum, is on display through Feb. 28 inside Bedrock’s historic building at 719 Griswold St.

The exhibit features architectural models of tall timber buildings, artifacts from structural quality and safety testing, and a mix of visual, narrative and video content that traces the rise of mass timber construction in cities around the world. Several Michigan-based projects are highlighted, illustrating how the approach is being adopted locally.
Organizers say the exhibition provides an accessible introduction to mass timber, a construction method that uses engineered wood products to create large-scale structures with a smaller carbon footprint than traditional steel or concrete buildings.
“We think that production of mass timber products is a logical addition to Michigan’s forest products industry,” said Patrick Mohney, senior lands program manager in the DNR’s Office of Public Lands. “This is another way that Michigan can grow its forest economy while providing sustainable materials for building.”
Regular exhibit hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
