ST. IGNACE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The U.S. Coast Guard will temporarily close the waters between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island on Lake Huron beginning at 1 p.m. on Jan. 20 to support the formation of the seasonal ice bridge.

The closure was ordered by the Captain of the Port for the Northern Great Lakes under federal regulations and is intended to allow ice conditions to strengthen between the mainland and the island. Officials say limiting vessel traffic helps promote safer and more stable ice development during the winter months.

Authorities are reminding recreational ice users to plan activities carefully, exercise caution, and stay well clear of active shipping channels. The Coast Guard said conditions on the ice can change rapidly and urged the public to monitor weather updates and local advisories before heading out.
