EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Kevin Guskiewicz will remain a Spartan for now.

More than a month after being named the new president at Clemson, Guskiewicz announced on Monday he would remain in that same role at Michigan State University.

In a letter, Guskiewicz wrote about the discussion over the future of leadership at MSU and the uncertainty his departure could create. “I know this period has created uncertainty and raised important questions across our community,” Guskiewicz wrote. “It also prompted a period of deep personal reflection about my own commitment to Michigan State and the future we are building together.” He added, “After much thought, countless conversations and careful consideration, I have decided to remain at Michigan State University and continue serving as your president.”

A rough transition.

The decision to stay put adds some stability to an otherwise tumultuous two months at MSU. Clemson hired Guskiewicz on May 27, athletic director J Batt left for Kentucky in June, and men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo blasted both in the media. Currently, Batt is listed on the staff directories of both MSU and Kentucky.

In addition, Guskiewicz has gone toe-to-toe with the Board of Trustees over transparency and non-disclosure agreements.

Stability and trust.

Guskiewicz mentioned in his letter that stability and trust matters. “I recognize that some members of our community may have questions about my commitment. Our university has experienced more than its share of change in recent years, and I regret that my decision-making over the past several weeks added to that uncertainty. For that, I am sincerely sorry.”

He continued, “Trust is not restored through words alone. It is earned through consistency, transparency and action.”
